Londroman, Alba County; d. 10.05.1950; Greek-Catholic auxiliary bishop and vicar; Attended high school and then theology in Blaj; doctor's degree in Theology in Rome; ordained priest in 1925; rector of the Theological Academy in Blaj; he became an auxiliary bishop of the Greek-Catholic Metropolitanate of Blaj in 1940; vicar general of Bucharest; arrested on 28.10.1948; imprisoned at the Dragoslavele Monastery together with another five Greek-Catholic bishops; in May 1949 he was taken to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for interrogation; tortured to provide information about the aid given by Catholic youth organizations to those who had sought refuge in the mountains; killed during an investigation on 10.05.1950; buried at the Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest; "After the start of the communist persecution against faith, he remained amid his followers in the capital-city, guiding, encouraging, and inspiriting them. In vain did the Groza Cabinet try to draw him to their side: Bishop Vasile Aftenie remained loyal to the Church he was serving. Isolated from the other bishops, investigated brutally, tortured by the political police... Vasile Aftenie, the most modern and sociable of the six bishops, does not yield. For one year did he resist these torments... Today, the body once tortured horribly rests at the Bellu Cemetery, where the believers continue to stop at his grave, attributing it miraculous gifts."He was assassinated on Gen. Nikolschi's order. Due to the maneuvering of the political police, the burial was not done immediately, so that the day of his death is recorded as 10 May. The Roman-Catholic priest asked to officiate at the funeral opened the casket and saw a big wound on the head of the deceased. For his daring, priest I. Baltheier, too, was arrested. All this was reported by Bishop Aftenie's manservant, Luca; he was tortured, his beard was torn out and he was killed with a crowbar. Nc. Auxiliary bishop at the Bishopric of Alba-Iulia and Fagaras; reason of arrest: possession of a letter from luliu Mamu; in March 1949 he was transferred to the Caldarusani Monastery and in April 1950 to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for investigation, where pressure was used to determine him to convert to Orthodoxy.

Served the Nucsoara parish, Curtea de Arges deanery, after the first arrest of priest Dragoi, beginning 1949; from 1952 he sent supplies to the organization Haiducii Muscelului, based in the Fagaras Mountains and led by the Arnautoiu brothers; arrested in 1958, when the Arnautoiu brothers fell; reason: sedition; sentenced to death together with the whole group and executed on 18.07.1959; under Sentence no. 107/19.05.1959; the execution took place at Jilava; according to certain versions (1960 and 1989) he was sent, together with priest Constantinescu and priest Dragoi, to Siberia, although initially it was thought they had been executed. He was the main moral and material support to the refugees in the mountains; He was executed between 9 p.m. and midnight at the Jilava Penitentiary. Nc. Sentenced to 8 years; year of death: 1958.

Served at the Vacaresti Church in Bucharest; manager of the Church Book Printing House; arrested on 10.08.1948; reason: multiplication of banned publications; the Bucharest Military Court changed the charges to "accessory to the offence of subversion apt to create a threat to the state security;" under Sentence no.303/8.03.1949 he was sent to prison for 4 years and 6 months; he should have been released on 07.02.1953 but, under resolution no. 512/1953, the Ministry of Internal Affairs prolonged his punishment; he was released on 18.06.1954, under the MIA's order no. 53210/1954, from the Caransebes prison, with pass no. 1929/1954; he returned to the Cutitul de Argint parish in Bucharest; suspended from his office according to the Decision no. 36800/1948 (October) of the Ministry of Cults. He had two children; in 1952 he was an inmate at Aiud.
